Civial War Union Army Hospital Ships Outfitted by the Sanitary Commission
The Sanitation Commission's hospital transportation services were a vital part of the Union Army's efforts to provide medical care to soldiers during the Civil War. The USSC coordinated the use of hospital ships to transport wounded and sick soldiers from battlefields to general hospitals in Northern cities. This service was particularly important during the 1862 Peninsula Campaign, where volunteer hospital transport ships assisted government ships in evacuating patients. The USSC's hospital transports were staffed by doctors who managed the wounded as they arrived, ensuring that the most seriously ill were treated first. The service provided a significant amount of medical care and support to the Union volunteer forces, contributing to the overall success of the Civil War."
