Cargo Ship :
  • Laid down in 1919, as the cargo ship SS Lake Fairton for the United States Shipping Board (USSB), at American Shipbuilding, Wyandotte, MI.
  • Launched in 1919
  • Delivered in December 1919 to the United States Shipping Board
  • Acquired by the Army Corps of Engineers in 1932, converted to a suction-dredge, rename Detroit Wayne
  • Used as flood control hulk by Corps of Engineers, 1932-1940
  • Sold to the Raritan Steamship Corp., re-converted to a cargo ship, renamed SS Raritan
  • Acquired by the War Shipping Administration circa 1941 as a bare bottom charter from the Raritan Steamship Co.
  • Allocated circa 1942 to the War Department Transportation Corp. as a sub bare bottom charter
  • Final Disposition, stranded on Seward Edge, Frying Pan Shoals, NC, February 28, 1942; became total loss.
