Alamosa Class Cargo Ship:
  • Laid down in 1944 as a Maritime Commission type (C1-M-AV1) hull, under a Maritime Commission contract, at Froemming Brothers, Inc., Milwaukee, WI.
  • Launched, 28 February 1945
  • Acquired by the US Navy, 31 July 1945
  • Commissioned USS Craighead (AK-175), 5 September 1945, LCDR. George M. Walker, USNR, in command
  • Decommissioned, 18 January 1946, at Norfolk, VA., and returned to the Maritime Commission the same day, for disposal
  • Struck from the Naval Register, 7 February 1946
  • Merchant Service
    Sold in 1947 to the Republic of Turkey for $693,862.00, passed to Deniz Nakliyati T.A.O., Turkey, reflagged Turkish and renamed SS Kastamonu
    SS Kastamonu with her sister ships SS Malatya [ex-USS Bullock (AK-165)], SS Kars [ex-USS Antrim (AK-159]. and SS Rize [ex-USS Hidalgo (AK-189) provided regular service between Turkey and Northern Europe for approximately 15 years.
