Calumet served the Revenue Cutter Service, the U. S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Navy

Harbor Cutter/Tug:

  • The first Calumet was built in 1894 by David Bell (Bell’s Steam Engine Works), Buffalo, NY
  • Commissioned USRC Calumet 18 October 1894
  • Transferred to the Navy during the Spanish American War
  • Returned to the Revenue Cutter Service
  • Transferred again to the Navy 6 April 1917 and commissioned 7 December 1917
  • Returned to the Treasury Department 28 August 1919
  • Decommissioned 17 December 1921
  • Recommissioned 17 July 1922
  • Renamed USCGC Tioga 28 September 1934
  • Designated as a Yard Tug WYT-74 sometime during World War II
  • Decommissioned 14 October 1946
  • Sold 22 March 1947 by the New Haven Towing Co, of New Haven, CT, Rebuilt and renamed John F. Drews
  • Acquired in 1950 by the Whaling City Dredge and Dock Corp. Of Groton, CT
  • Caught fire while under tow to Groton off New Haven, CT in Long Island Sound. Wooden cabins and superstructure burned off. Rebuilt and converted to diesel
  • Acquired in 1958 by C. A. Pitts General Contractor, Ltd. of Toronto, Ontario, Canada
  • Acquired in 1962 by Merritt-Chapman and Scott Corp. of Cleveland, OH
  • Acquired in 1967 by The Dunbar and Sullivan Dredging Co.of Detroit, MI and renamed William J. Dugan
  • She was then acquired by Bob Billinghton, then Fred Paine of Homer, AK. Where the tug was renamed as the Spanky Paine
  • Abandoned in Homer water in the 1980's
  • Scrapped in 2011 at Homer, AK.
