SC-497 Class Submarine Chaser:

  • Laid down 1 December 1942 as PC-1272 by the Quincy Adams Yacht Yard Inc., Quincy, MA
  • Launched 19 April 1943 and reclassified SC-1272Commissioned USS SC-1272, 4 June 1943
  • Reclassified as a Command Submarine Chaser, SCC-1272, 20 August 1945
  • Transferred to the Maritime Commission 14 October 1947
  • Sold in 1947 to Alice Ashton of North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
  • Sold 19 November 1948 to the Nelson Brothers Fisheries, Ltd. of Vancouver and named Norman Nelson
  • Renamed Western Dispatcher later that year
  • Scuttled 5 April 1978 in Bedwell Bay, British Columbia at 49° 19.63' N., 122° 54.75' W.

  • Displacement 148 t.
  • Length 110' 10"
  • Beam 17'
  • Draft 6' 6"
  • Speed 15.6 kts.
  • Complement 28
  • Armament: One 40mm mount, two .50 cal. machine guns, two depth charge projector "K Guns," two sets Mk 20 Mousetrap rails with four 7.2 projectiles and two depth charge tracks
  • Propulsion: Two 880bhp General Motors 8-268A diesel engines, Snow and Knobstedt single reduction gear, two shafts.
