SC-306 served the U. S. Navy and the Department of Justice


SC-1 Class Submarine Chaser:

  • Laid down by the Puget Sound Navy Yard, Bremerton, WA
  • Commissioned 27 February 1918
  • Entered Mare Island Navy Yard, Mare Island, CA 13 July 1921
  • Decommissioned 20 June 1922 at Mare Island
  • Towed from Mare Island 28 November 1922
  • Transferred to the Department of Justice 17 December 1930 for use at Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary and named McDowell
  • Was still in use at Alcatraz in 1950
  • Fate unknown.

    Specifications:

  • Displacement 85 t.
  • Length 110'
  • Beam 14' 8.75"
  • Draft (fl) 5' 8"
  • Speed 18 kts.
  • Complement 27
  • Armament: One 3"/23 gun mount, two .30 cal. machine guns, and one depth charge projector "Y Gun"
  • Propulsion: Three 220hp Standard gasoline engines, three screws.
