2900k | LCT(5)-16, 17 August 1944, Baie de Cavalaire, Southern France. During the invasion of Southern France, LCT(5)-16 was assigned
to the U.S. Navy Salvage Force, Shallow Water Salvage Unit. She has been altered by the installation of sheer legs forward with a lifting capacity of thirty tons and the addition of a
gasoline-driven winch with eight tons capacity secured to the deck at the forward part of the superstructure. In this photo a mined concrete pyramid underwater obstacle is being
detonated by a naval combat demolition unit which cleared these obstacles obstructing Alpha Red Beach (Cavalaire Bay).

830k | LCT(5)-16, 17 August 1944, Baie de Cavalaire, Southern France. Navy salvage LCT A (LCT-16) raising an LCVP (B) which had been sunk after
striking a mined concrete pyramid in the first assault wave landing on Alpha Red Beach. A second sunken LCVP may be seen in the rear of the one being raised. A DD tank which hit a
mined obstacle and sank may be observed at (C). The LCVPs were cut in two by the explosion which destroyed the portion from bow to midship Being in the first assault wave and combat
loaded, severe casualties were incurred among the personnel embarked in these two landing craft. The force of the explosion was severe.
