USS Niagara (III)


Steamer:
  • Built as the steamer Niagara in 1877 by John Roach and Sons, Chester, PA.
  • Acquired by the Navy from Ward Line Steamship Company 11 April 1898
  • Fitted out as a distilling and supply ship of the Collier Service
  • Commissioned, USS Niagara, 11 April 1898 at New York, CDR. George. A. Bicknell in command
  • During the Spanish-American War she served the fleet off Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Haiti
  • Niagara remained on station in the Caribbean Sea until 24 July 1898 when she departed Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for New York, arriving 3 September 1898
  • Niagara remained at New York until she decommissioned 14 October 1898
  • Final Disposition, sold 19 July 1899. Renamed Brunswick in 1907, then Truxillo in 1919. Scrapped in 1926.
