CSS Resolute

Civil War Medal
Sidewheel Steamer:
  • Built as the tug Resolute in 1858 at Savannah, GA.
  • Entered Confederate service in 1861, operated as a tow boat, transport, receiving ship, and tender to CSS Savannah
  • 5 and 6 November 1861, CSS Resolute in company with CSS Savannah, CSS Sampson, and CSS Lady Davis harassed Union forces preparing to attack Port Royal Sound, S.C.
  • In early November Resolute helped evacuate the garrison of Fort Walker and spiked the Confederate guns at Pope's Landing on Hilton Head Island
  • Resolute in company with CSS Sampson attacked Union vessels at the mouth of the Savannah River, 26 November 1861
  • On 12 December 1864 while in company with the gunboats CSS Macon and CSS Sampson attempted to destroy the Charleston and Savannah Railway bridge spanning the Savannah River
  • Resolute was disabled by colliding with the two gunboats during their retreat
  • Final Disposition, run aground on Argyle Island on the Savannah River and captured by Union soldiers and taken into Federal service.
