  • The first Muscatine was built in 1917 as Scandinavic by the Standard Shipbuilding Corp., Shooters Island, NY
  • Renamed Stian
  • Launched 20 October 1917
  • Renamed Muscatine
  • Acquired by the Navy 28 April 1918
  • Delivered 2 May 1918 and commissioned USS Muscatine (ID 2226)
  • Decommissioned 16 July 1919 at New York and returned to the United States Shipping Board
  • Sold in 1929 to F. D. M. Stracham of Savannah, GA
  • Renamed Floridian in 1930
  • Renamed Elizabeth in 1938
  • Torpedoed and sunk 20 May 1942 in the Yucatan Channel by the German submarine U-103.

    Specifications:

  • Displacement 10,562 t.
  • Length 392' 6"
  • Beam 52'
  • Draft 23' 8¼"
  • Speed 9 kts.
  • Complement 93
  • Armament: One 5"/51 and one 3"/50 mount
  • Propulsion: Three single ended boilers, one 2,500hp vertical triple expansion steam engine, one shaft.
