Screw Tug:
  • Built in 1861 as the screw tug A.C. Powell, at Syracuse, N. Y.
  • Purchased at New York City by the Navy, 3 October 1861
  • Assigned to the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron for service in the North Carolina sounds
  • Reassigned to the Potomac Flotilla, date unknown
  • Returned to the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron, 30 June 1862, for duty with the James River Flotilla doing dispatch and picket duty
  • Renamed Alert while serving with the James River Flotilla
  • Assisted Federal Army units in preventing Confederate forces from taking Suffolk on the Nansemond River in April 1863
  • Alert caught fire while moored at Norfolk Navy Yard, 31 August 1863, and sank
  • Raised by October of that year and returned to duty
  • Renamed Watch, 2 February 1865
  • Watch participated in the expedition to Richmond in April 1865
  • Decommissioned, 26 May 1865, at Washington Navy Yard
  • Sold, 5 July 1865, at Washington Navy Yard, redocumented Watch
  • Watch served as a commercial tug until abandoned in 1886
