Escambia Class Fleet Oiler:
  • Laid down, as Mission Los Angeles a Maritime Commission type (T2-SE-A2) tanker hull under Maritime Commission contract (MC hull 1830) at Marinship, Sausalito, CA.
  • Launched, 8 October 1944
  • Acquired by the Navy and commissioned USS Caney (AO-95), 25 March 1945, CDR. Roy S. Hanson, USNR, in command
  • During World War II USS Caney was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and participated in the following campaign:

    Asiatic-Pacific Campaigns
    Campaign and Dates Campaign and Dates
    Okinawa Gunto operation
    Assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto, 18 to 25 June 1945     		3d Fleet operations against Japan
    10 to 23 July and 9 to 15 August 1945

  • Following World War II USS Caney was assigned to Occupation service from 10 September to 16 November 1945
  • Decommissioned, 27 February 1946, struck from the Naval Register and transferred to the Maritime Commission, for lay up in the National Defense Reserve Fleet, Beaumont, TX.
  • Struck from the Naval Register, 12 March 1946
  • Reacquired by the Navy and reinstated in the Naval Register, 21 February 1948
  • Assigned to the Navy Transportation Service (NTS) and placed in service as Caney (AO-95)
  • Transferred to the Military Sea Transportation Service MSTS, 18 July 1950, and placed in service as USNS Caney (T-AO-95)
  • Placed out of service, Struck from the Naval Register and transferred to the Maritime Administration, 21 May 1959, for lay up in the National Defense Reserve Fleet, Beaumont, TX.
  • Acquired by the US Army , 6 March 1966 and converted to a floating power station for Vietnam service at Bender Shipbuilding and Repair Co., Mobile, AL.
  • Permanent tittle transfer to the US Army, 9 September 1974
  • Final Disposition, sold for scrapping, 9 September 1974, at Vung Tau, South Vietnam to China Dismantled Vessel Trading Co., LTD Kaosiung, TW (PD-X-983) dated 15 August 1974 for $726,567.00
  • USS Caney earned two battle stars for World War II service
