33k | "Gonzo Guzzler," 1980. "Gonzo Station" (named for a character from "The Muppet Show," very popular at the time) was the nickname of an area of carrier operations in the North Arabian Sea. It was regularly patrolled by carrier task forces during the Iran hostage crisis (1979-1981) and the so-called "Tanker War" (1981-1988). Following Operation Desert Storm (1991), "Gonzo Station" lost its strategic importance as it was too far away from Iraq and the Northern Persian Gulf. June 1, 1914 was the day General Order 99 was promulgated, prohibiting alcohol on board naval vessels, or at Navy yards or stations. |
